As a GP practice, we are very proud to support local groups that helps the wellbeing of patients in the Bassetlaw District.

In Sam’s Name is a peer support group run by volunteers who are 18+ suffering from mental health issues. The group originated in Worksop and has expanded across Bassetlaw and Nottinghamshire with fortnightly meetings in Bassetlaw, Ollerton, Mansfield and Kirkby in Ashfield.

On 16th October 2021, Sam “Sponge” Fisher unfortunately passed away through tragic circumstances. Sam/ Sponge/ Mr Fisher, was described by everyone as a cheeky, loveable character with a heart of gold that passions in teaching, football, music and fashion and always greeted all his friends with “Alreyt Bod”.

The group was founded by his friend Richard McHugh with the intention of creating a safe space for males to break the stigma of talking about their mental health, sharing their stories in a non judgemental environment and finding support from others that been in a similar situation. Following the enormous growth of members at the men’s talking group for In Sam’s Name, a woman’s support group was later set up in April 2023 with regular meetings that are located in Worksop where it creates a safe space for females to talk about their mental health and wellbeing.

In Sam’s Name has plans to expand and develop with collaborations with Welbeck Abbey brewery on working on a new charity beer called Raising the Dough with every 10p a pint is sold, it’s then donated to In Sam’s Name with the goal of raising £400. The organisation are also working on introducing new activities such as fitness in football and boxing as a way to boost positivity as well as encouraging members to talk about their mental health & wellbeing. In Sam’s Name also intends to increase numbers in Retford, Mansfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Retford & Villages PCN want to promote the incredible work that In Sam’s Name is currently doing and what wellbeing services they provide with it being a way to signpost those who are wanting professional mental health services that are available. Working with various mental health charities in Bassetlaw, we try to achieve the aims of Healthy Living Healthy Minds in the Nottinghamshire district by promoting the events and group meetings that occur. Our Senior I.T Officer, Joshua Maddison, will be challenging himself and friends this weekend of climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland to raise funds for In Sam’s Name and a goal of raising £500 for the charity. Joshua and his friends chose In Sam’s Name as it was local to them and wanted to support charities that broke down barriers when discussing mental health among men.

With the aim of breaking barriers in physical health and stigmas around mental health, the group is attempting to raise £500 for In Sam’s Name as they reach for the 1,345 metre summit.

Please help us support this amazing charity by donating to our fundraising page. To donate, please find more information here: Fundraiser by Joshua Maddison : 4 Lads Climbing Nevis (gofundme.com)
